不要小看任何一首歌曲

前天看康熙看他們在唱英文歌
其中小鐘唱了老鷹合唱團的加州旅館
他們說這是一首鬼歌
本來以為他們是在開玩笑
但仔細看看歌詞就發現其實是真的
像是we haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine
或是they stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill the beast
這些頗令人費解的歌詞感覺的確很詭異
尤其是最後一句you can checkout any time you like, but you can never leave
整個讓這首歌有了非常懸而未解的結局
根本就是個靈異故事吧
但是等我上網搜尋了一下才發現
原來每首歌曲背後真的都蘊含著更為深遠的故事

Her mind is Tiffany-twisted
she got the Mercedes Benz
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys,
that she calls friends

He said,'We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine'
And still those voices are calling from far away,

I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before

問題就在於這個旅館到底存不存在
曾經有人在南加州的托多斯桑托斯小鎮找到一個
因為他剛好就在高速公路的沙漠旁邊
而且跟唱片封面上的旅館很像
不僅旅館的主人號稱這就是歌曲中的加州旅館
甚至還有數篇報章開始登載這個加州旅館的故事
但最後還是引來了歌曲創作者Don Henley的否認
因為老鷹合唱團從未到過此地
所以難道這個旅館真的不存在嗎
那這個Hotel指的到底是什麼
有人說是精神病院
因為i heard the mission bell似乎是幻聽
heaven or hell則是雙重人格
dance in the courtyard則是病人常有的症狀
they just can't kill the beast指的是趕不走的幻覺
relax不就是醫生常對病人說的話
尤其因為七十年代正是恐怖片流行的時候
而歌詞中包括一個人在沙漠大路上、拿著蠟燭的女人、酒吧的神秘領班等畫面
都很有恐怖片的影子
而恐怖片中精神病院常是主要的背景場所
更多人說是戒毒所
認為加州旅館是在南加州公路旁的一個自願戒毒院
而這一次老鷹合唱團也的確有團員曾經吸毒與入院了
而歌詞中也再再和吸毒扯上關係
包括一開始的colitas其實是一個西班牙語
cola在西班牙語中指尾巴
在七十年代大麻的苞蕾被戲稱為小尾巴
所以colitas應該是有暗指大麻的意思
而lit up a candle想也知道它是點燃了什麼
這樣一來為什麼會my head grew heavy my sight grew dim
以及how they dance in the courtyard也都解釋的通了
似乎都是吸毒後典型的反應
而this could be heaven or this could be hell
和you can checkout any time you like but you can never leave
不正是警告人別吸毒的警世良語嗎
另外也有人比較沒想像力的說
加州旅館其實是象徵美國的音樂界
因為當中提到了
we haven't had that spirit here, since nineteen sixty nine
spirit除了可以翻成烈酒
當然它更簡單的意思就是精神
一九六九年的伍德斯多克被視為搖滾的頂峰
而六十年代是美國音樂界的自由創作時期
搖滾樂的流行成為六十年代自由與反叛思想的象徵
但到了七十年代
盛況帶來商人貪婪的眼睛
搖滾樂手幾乎都墮落沉迷享樂
每個人都是prisoners here, 但of our own device
歌詞暗示在伍德斯多克之後無論多美麗
搖滾的精神已經不再存在了
另一方面一九六九年也是六十年代的最後一年
所以也能解釋成自一九六九年後
美國便遇到了中東石油危機、越戰、尼克森的水門事件等
美國的從奮鬥的青年們變成了頹廢的中年人
精神已不再了
至於老鷹合唱團自己的說法則是
加州旅館是他們對洛杉磯上流社會的理解
可看作是對總是追求奢侈生活的美國的一個象徵

誰會想到一首看似情歌的背後
原來隱含了那麼多神秘的意寓
不管是作者原本就藏在其中的
或是後人自發的加以延伸闡發
我太喜歡這種感覺了
尤其是原本是情歌但其實不是情歌
甚至是表面上甜蜜輕快的歌曲其實背地裡講的是仇恨和悲傷
那種反差和跳tone真是蠻吸引人的
讓人覺得聽音樂不只是聽音樂
還有謎題可以讓人探究
像是陳昇也說ONE NIGHT IN 北京其實是反戰歌曲是對戰爭的心痛控訴
所以說
還有嗎

       我看完這篇文章後深深的覺得難道搖滾樂和毒品密不可分嗎？

一定要達到迷幻不分現實的世界才會寫出的出經典嗎？

Hotel Colifornia中令人覺得有鬼意的歌詞，有可能昰吸毒之後的幻覺，才會

寫出如此懸疑的劇情。

      這一首歌讓我想到另一首老鷹的精典Desperado(亡命之徒)這一首描述作惡

多端的歹徒被關在監獄中失去自由的感嘆，讓我聯想到老鷹的團員有因吸毒

而被關進勒戒所，是否有關聯，還昰恰巧巧合。

     總之，毒品不昰好東西，小朋友不要碰優。
